German Cockroach (Blattella germanica): The most common and problematic species in Canada. Small (12–15mm), tan to light brown with two dark parallel stripes. Unlike other species, German cockroaches almost never live outdoors — they exist exclusively in human structures. Found in kitchens, bathrooms, behind refrigerators and stoves, inside microwaves, and under dishwashers. A single female and her descendants can produce 30,000 offspring in one year.
American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana): Much larger (35–40mm), reddish-brown. Often called a “water bug.” Enters homes from sewer systems, floor drains, and exterior cracks. Prefers warm, moist environments: basements, boiler rooms, around floor drains.
Health risks: Cockroaches carry and transmit Salmonella, E. coli, Staphylococcus, Listeria, and numerous parasites. They contaminate food surfaces, utensils, and stored food. Cockroach allergens from shed skins, droppings, and body parts are the second most common indoor allergen after dust mites in urban environments — a major asthma trigger, particularly in children.
Extraordinary reproductive rate: German cockroaches reproduce faster than any other common Canadian household pest. A single breeding pair in ideal conditions can establish a population of thousands within months. By the time you see cockroaches in daylight, the infestation is already advanced.
Cockroach extermination typically ranges $200–$350 for a residential unit with two visits included. Severe infestations, multi-unit buildings, or commercial kitchens may be quoted differently. Call 905-925-8427 for a free consultation.
Not necessarily. German cockroaches commonly arrive in grocery bags, cardboard boxes, used appliances, and through shared walls in multi-unit buildings. Even meticulously clean homes develop infestations. The important thing is to treat promptly.
Significant reduction in activity within 1–2 weeks. Full elimination typically takes 2–4 weeks with a complete program including the follow-up visit. Severe infestations may require additional visits.
Gel bait treatments require no evacuation. If crack-and-crevice spray is also applied, we may ask you to vacate the kitchen for 2–4 hours. We advise you specifically at the time of treatment.
Yes — German cockroaches readily move between units through shared wall voids, plumbing chases, and gaps around pipes. In multi-unit buildings, a whole-floor or whole-building treatment approach is often necessary for lasting results. We coordinate with property managers for building-wide programs.
