Ticks in Toronto: where Toronto Public Health found them

Toronto Public Health drags for ticks each fall, when adult ticks are active. In 2025 it found adult blacklegged ticks at these sites. Blacklegged ticks are the species that spreads Lyme disease, and the City's own wording is that the overall risk of Lyme disease in Toronto is believed to be low, with exposure highest in wooded, brushy areas where ticks are established.

Toronto's ravine system covers about 17% of the city's land area, more than 300 kilometres and 11,000 hectares, and about 30,000 private addresses sit within it. Ravines are forested, which matches the habitat Toronto Public Health describes for ticks, so a yard that backs onto one has a different tick picture than a downtown condo. Our tick treatment is an exterior perimeter fogging aimed at the edges where ticks wait, and it is only needed where those habitats touch the property.

The City uses three larvicides in its program (methoprene, Bacillus sphaericus and Bti), and Toronto's mosquito program targets Culex mosquitoes, the most common West Nile carrier in the region, which prefer to bite birds but will also bite people. Frequently asked questions: pest control in Toronto

Which pests does a Toronto landlord have to deal with?

Toronto's RentSafeTO requirements say landlords and building owners are responsible for keeping a unit free of pests such as ants, cockroaches, bedbugs, spiders, mice and rats. Owners must inspect common areas at least every 30 days, and any area within 72 hours of learning about pests, and use a Ministry of Environment licensed pest control company where required.

Is Lyme disease a risk in Toronto?

Toronto Public Health believes the overall risk is low, but all of Toronto is considered an estimated risk area for blacklegged ticks, which are found in wooded or brushy areas with leaf litter or tall grass and not usually on mowed lawns, sports fields or paved areas.

When does the City treat catch basins for mosquitoes?

In 2026, Round 1 ran from June 1 to about the 2nd week of July and Round 2 from about the 2nd week of July to mid-August. The City treats its own catch basins, so water on your private property is your responsibility.

Do I report rats to the City or hire a company?

Property owners and businesses are responsible for managing rats on their own property, so owners hire a licensed company. If you rent in an apartment building and your landlord does not act, you can contact 311.

Do you serve every Toronto neighbourhood?

Yes. We serve Toronto's districts including Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, East York, York and Leslieville, and nearby cities.
